Council Tenants in Sutton Borough are being required by the Government to pay a massive £10million in 2008/09 (up from £8mn for 2007/08) to fund other councils in the country NOT to improve council housing right here in Sutton where the money came from! The amount being snatched by the Government is the equivalent of a whopping £1,473 from each rented property in Sutton.

This £10million will be taken from us and used to fund other councils in the country enabling them to improve their properties whilst ours are deteriorating.

The local Lib Dems are supporting the campaign to get a fair deal for Sutton's tenants. They want to see improvements made to housing in Sutton and are calling for the Government to scrap its SNATCH BACK of money from Sutton and allow Sutton's money to fund Sutton's housing!

This is a hidden tax that hits vulnerable members of the community - help scrap it by signing the online petition.

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister and the Government.

We regret the large rent increase that has been imposed on tenants of the London Borough of Sutton by the Government. It is unjust that tenants of this borough are subsiding tenants in other parts of the country by almost £10million in 2008/09, the highest amount of any borough in London. This equates to almost 19 weeks rent, or 40%, from each and every tenant. We call on the Prime Minister and Government to stop this tax on London Borough of Sutton tenants and allow this rent money, on average, £1473 from each tenant, to be used to repair local council homes.
