Hackney Says No to Nuclear Trains

The government has been running regular trains carrying nuclear waste through Hackney on the North London Line for years.

They say it’s safe. We don’t believe them. There is no way of knowing what could happen in the event of a terrorist attack on one of these trains, or an accident.

Now, in spite of all the environmental and other evidence against nuclear power, the Labour government wants to build more nuclear power stations.

If they can’t think of a better way to transport the unbelievably dangerous waste these plants produce than transporting it through the middle of London, then they shouldn’t build any more nuclear power stations - and they should get rid of the ones we’ve got as soon as possible.

Please sign the petition below to support our campaign and to help rid Hackney of this threat to our safety and wellbeing once and for all.

We the undersigned call on the government to act with the greatest speed to:

1) Make an immediate commitment to ending the transportation of radioactive waste through the London Borough of Hackney and other population centres and end such transportations as soon as is practicable.

2) Grant a power to locally elected authorities allowing them to refuse transit of radioactive waste though populated areas within an authority.

3) Impose a moratorium on the construction of new nuclear facilities until such time as the safe transport and disposal of waste from these facilities can be guaranteed.

Trains carrying nuclear waste from the nuclear facilities in the south and east of the UK have long been routed through Hackney, along the North London Line, on their long journey to the reprocessing facility at Sellafield.

No real data proving the safety of these transports exists. In these times of heightened threats to our safety and security, we are sick of waiting for the government to find a better way to transport this waste. To add insult to injury, they are now proposing a new generation of nuclear power stations, even before solving the problems of their predecessors.

However great or slight the risk, be it from terrorism or from accident, we don't believe it's worth taking, in an area where a quarter of a million people live in some of the most densely populated conditions in the Western world.
