The creation of Israel's Aprtheid wall around Palestinian settlements in the West Bank is a further example of the expansion of Israel's authority over civilians occupying land beyond the 1949 'Green Line'. The wall acts not only as an inpenetrable barrier between civilians on both sides of the West Bank border, but prevents the creation of a viable Palestinian state which is increasingly fragmented by the 400 mile long construction, and forced to rely on outside aid to compensate and ensure welfare for it's people, cut off from their jobs and former land possessions in newly claimed Israeli territory.
It is important that we act now to pressure our government into action on the issue of Palestine, something for which Blair at least is a strong advocate, and ensure that effective measures are taken against the Israeli government to prevent both consolidation of apartheid policy, and further unrest between Israeli and Palestinian civillians who are face increasing insecurity.
“We find the continued construction of Israel’s West Bank barrier to be in breach of basic human rights, and therefore unacceptable. We strongly urge the international community to forcefully oppose the completion of this project and exercise necessary restraint on Israeli authority.”
ANTI-APARTHEID CAMPAIGN FOR
A VIABLE PALESTINE
Recent developments on Israel’s active Apartheid campaign against residents living in the West Bank has alerted the international community once again to the ongoing conflict between Palestinians and the Israeli state that has escalated for more than 60 years.
In 2003, the Israeli government, led by Ariel Sharon, began a construction project aimed at containing Palestinian threats to Isreali security in the West Bank. The 25ft high wall officially annexing Palestinian land from Israel is now over 440 miles long, and deviates at many points from the ‘Green Line’ drawn up between Palestinian and Israeli land established in 1949. The effect of such an ambitious move is severely debilitating for those living within what many are now referring to as ‘The largest prison on Earth’ by which civilians are placed under surveillance from established watch-towers, armed patrols and electric fencing, cut off from work and relatives.
While criticism for the ongoing actions of Israel against Palestinian civilians in the West bank is fierce, the international community has refused to act on the subject of Israel’s enforced apartheid for more than four years, and counting, despite the obvious breach of Human Rights in implementing this project.
It is vital that the reaction to such violent measures is worldwide, and not restricted solely to those in the ‘Arab’ states, the Middle East and Israel. Your voice counts: by including your details below, you can help us to put pressure on our own government into recognising the need for urgent action on Israel’s separation barrier, before it limits the possibility of peace between Israel and Palestine
