Selling off our schools and playing fields over the last 30 years was hugely short-sighted.

Our children and young people deserve a good start in life - it's only fair. And part of that is ensuring they can go to good, local schools. But the shortage of primary school places in Merton is a massive problem.

In the 1980s, and in the 1990s and 2000s - whilst the birth rate was going up - Merton's Labour and Conservative councillors were busy selling off schools and playing fields - land that could have been used now.

Instead, the Council has been forced to scrabble around, adding extra classes onto existing schools to make sure there are enough places.

We say "enough is enough". We need long-term planning in our politics.

Back our 3 point plan for local schools:
  1. Protect existing school sites; don't sell them off like the Tories and Labour did in the 1990s/2000s.
  2. Keep our good schools a good size; you can't just keep increasing the size of existing schools forever.
  3. Plan for the future; we need to be thinking NOW about future developments - will we need even more primary schools, what about more secondary schools? We must start thinking about setting aside land in new developments for educational use now.
