Across the length and breadth of Pembroke people are dissatisfied with the pavements. In some places there are no pavements at all! In other places the surface is uneven, because the slabs are broken or have been badly patched with blacktop. The entire pavement may be asphalt, which quickly deteriorates and becomes uneven.

Pembroke Liberal Democrats think that this is highly unsatisfactory:-

- Walking is a mode of transport which keeps people fit and healthy, and has no carbon emissions!

- Children should walk to school where possible to cut down congestion and improve road safety, but they can only do that when a safe route is available.

- Poor pavements can cause social isolation for people with eyesight problems or difficulty with walking, because it stops them from venturing out.

- Bad pavements are noticed by visitors and create an impression of the town as run-down.

We the undersigned call upon Pembrokeshire County Council to address the poor state of pedestrian pavements in our Town.  In many instances they simply do not exist, forcing people (including children and those with disabilities) to walk in the road.  Where they do exist the surface is often in a poor state of repair and uneven.  We believe that every effort should be made to encourage people to walk within Towns, both as a way of reducing carbon emissions and as a way of promoting fitness and health.  We think it particularly important that children be encouraged to walk to school.  So Safe Routes to School should be given a very high priority.
