The Government is preparing rules (set to come into force in March 2009) which will force internet companies to keep a record of every email, every text and every voicemail that YOU send in the UK. (See BBC report.)

Liberal Democrat Henry Vann is campaigning against this massive invasion of your privacy.
It's YOUR personal data, not the Government's.

"This Labour government has gone too far in its quest to collect all our information," said Henry. "The government want a massive database of all your personal details and they want to collect your DNA. Now they want all your emails and texts as well.

"All this will do is put billions and billions of OUR money into the hands of computer companies. It will not make us any safer. In fact, their past track record shows that they cannot be trusted with our personal data and will quite possibly lose the information."

Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Huhne MP added: "This Government has consistently misunderstood the need to balance security with liberty. When people are struggling to make ends meet, there must be a better way to spend taxpayers' money than forcing internet providers to snoop on us."

Official criticism of the proposals
In July 2008, the Information Commissioner, Richard Thomas, criticised the proposed Government-run telephone and internet communications database. (See reports in The Guardian and on Prison-Planet.)

I oppose Government plans to collect all my emails and texts. Taking away our freedoms like this does not make us more secure and the Government cannot be trusted to keep our data safe.
