FIREWORKS SAVED!

Lewisham's LabourMayor was threatening to scrap the Blackheath Public Firework Display in future years.    Despite Council Tax under Labour rising by more than any other Council in inner London, the Mayor suggested scrapping the firework display to save cash.

Liberal Democrats in Lewisham opposed the plan.  We said that scrapping the Blackheath fireworks would mean:
- Losing a family event that brings people together
- More accidents with fireworks
- A loss of trade for shops and venues in the village

Over 2,500 people signed the online petition at this site or joined our Facebook Group.   Thanks to them, the Mayor was forced to withdraw his proposal.   This means we can look forward to fireworks on Blackheath in 2009, and hopefully for many years to come.
