Local Lib Dems have launched a campaign to protect family homes in the Selly Oak Ward.

Family homes can currently be bought and rented out as houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) for 3 to 6 unrelated people without planning permission. Under new powers the Council can decide that in some areas landlords must apply for planning permission.

"There are good landlords," said Cllr Robert Wright, "but many absentee landlords don't care about our area or their tenants and are just in it for the money."

"Liberal Democrats believe in balanced and sustainable communities. We want Selly Oak and Selly Park to be attractive places for everyone to live in - long term residents and students alike."

Please support our campaign by signing the petition below.

I/We the undersigned call on Birmingham City Council to require planning permission before family homes in the Selly Oak Ward can be converted into Houses in Multiple Occupation (Class C4).

Why is this an issue?

Too many privately rented houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) in a road can lead to problems with parking and rubbish collections. These issues affect everyone who lives in the area - both owner occupiers and tenants and long term and short term residents.

Schools can also suffer if there are not enough local children to attend them (their funding relates to the number of pupils they have).

The local housing market also makes it difficult for local families to get a foot on the property ladder.
